From New Fuseki to Chinese and Kobayashi systems, joseki became a component
New Fuseki broke the habit of completing one corner at a time in 1933. Chinese and Kobayashi formations went further: stones already on a side began pricing approaches, pincers, and tenuki before the joseki started.
New Fuseki reassembled four local units into one board
In 1933 Kitani Minoru and Go Seigen brought 3-3, 4-4, tengen, and higher opening experiments into professional play. The crucial break was not exotic coordinates alone. They refused to wait for one corner to settle before valuing the next. The reconstruction contrasts an older model that makes two corners legible with a new one whose first five moves already declare territory, influence, and center direction—less local insurance, earlier coordination.

With a Black formation already on the right, an upper-right pincer no longer attacks only the approach stone. It extends a framework and drives White toward a prepared direction. A locally balanced exchange is therefore repriced by the Chinese Opening. The efficiency gain comes from one move doing two jobs; the risk comes from prior commitment. If White can abandon the approach stone and turn lightly, Black's large formation may become a heavy asset that needs care.

Chinese and Kobayashi openings are not compulsory strings to copy. They are systems that precondition later joseki. A Kobayashi structure links komoku, enclosure, and side extension so the opponent's approach direction is constrained in advance; a Chinese formation uses side geometry more directly for attack. These boards reconstruct representative structures. The question is not one canonical order but whether move seven inherits a second job from earlier stones.

A productive drill does not memorize one hundred full lines. Put the same local pattern into two opposite boards: friendly support on one side, opposing strength on the other. M3 is unchanged here. In the first board it attacks and expands; in the second it may drive Black toward White's strength. If one outside stone reverses the conclusion, you have learned the joseki's trigger. If M3 survives only as a remembered screenshot, you have not.
Change one right-side stone around the same M3 pincer and double function becomes liability; context determines efficiency.
